What pressure washing means

In everyday language, pressure washing means using a pressurised water stream to lift dirt, grime and some organic growth from a hard outdoor surface. It is often discussed for driveways, paths, some pavers and other sound hard surfaces.

Force is only one part of the job. Distance, technique, rinse quality and what happens to the wash water also matter. A busy-looking blast is not the same as a finished clean. See Pressure Washing.

What soft washing means

Soft washing means a lower-pressure, more controlled clean. It is often discussed for walls, painted or coated surfaces, and other exteriors where high force can be a poor match.

It is not a slogan for “chemicals instead of water”, and it is not a universal substitute for every outdoor job. Suitability still depends on the material and condition. See Soft Washing.

Why pressure is not automatically better

More force can remove dirt faster on a suitable surface. It can also mark, etch, lift a coating, drive water behind a finish, or scatter debris onto glass, gardens and neighbouring property.

There is no single “safe pressure” that suits every outdoor surface. This page does not publish PSI charts or tell homeowners what setting to use. Equipment operation is not a DIY lesson here.

What changes the appropriate method

• Surface — concrete, pavers, brick, render, painted walls and roofing do not all respond the same way.
• Age — newer and older materials can tolerate different approaches.
• Condition — cracks, softness, previous repairs and wear change the risk.
• Staining — dirt, organic growth, oil and rust are not one problem.
• Coatings — paint, sealer and decorative finishes can fail if the method is too aggressive.
• Access — hose runs, parking, height and how close the work sits to the house.
• Surrounding conditions — gardens, neighbours, glass, drainage and where wash water will go.

We look at the surface, its age and condition, the staining present, previous coatings where relevant, access, surrounding conditions, and the result you want — then select pressure washing, soft washing, a targeted treatment, or preparation and sealing where it suits.
